MUN: Salt Lake School Model United Nations 2017, Kolkata

Model United Nations (also Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. Stress is given to the careful examination and resolution of pressing issues, emphasizing process over product. During the conference, students learn the importance of balancing national interests with the needs of the international community, while also learning about the powers and limitations of international negotiations. Delegates will preserve their countries’ national policy while negotiating in the face of other, sometimes conflicting, international policies. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation or an NGO in a simulated session of an organ (committee) of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research on a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, discuss, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.

At Salt Lake School, we are organizing an MUN with the intention of introducing as any many students as we can to the concept of Model United Nations, in recognition of the fact that now more than ever there is the crucial need to teach young minds the importance of peace, harmony and cooperation and to show them the avenues through which these may be achieved.

INTERNATIONAL PRESS

“ The media is the most powerful entity in the world. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent and that’s power, because they control the minds of the masses.” ~ Malcolm X.

Dear Reporters,

As a part of the International Press Corps at this year’s SLSMUN 2017, you will get to experience the conference’s ever-changing political climate through the lens of an onlooker. The International Press acts as unbiased journalists; they do not represent the interests and policies of a country but are representatives of public opinion on a global podium. Their job is to report and investigate on the proceedings in committees through a plethora of articles, conducting press conferences, opinion polls and interviews, and publishing press releases and editorials. The International Press bridges the gap between the United Nations and the rest of the world and as members of the Press, you will be responsible for maintaing that link.

In this committee, you will discover the power and sway of words, the necessity of balanced reporting in conveying the pulse of the entire conference, and most importantly, the absolute need to challenge decisions and actions taken by delegates of all nations across committees.

DAWN OF DONS 1931 POST CASTELLAMMARESE WAR

The Castellammarese War was a bloody power struggle for control of the Italian-American Mafia between partisans of Joe “The Boss” Masseria and those of Salvatore Maranzano. It was so called because Maranzano was based in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. Maranzano’s faction won, and he declared himself capo di tutti capi (“boss of all bosses”), the undisputed leader of the entire Mafia. However, he was soon murdered in turn by a faction of young upstarts led by Lucky Luciano, who established a power-sharing arrangement called “The Commission”, a group of five Mafia families of equal stature, to avoid such wars in the future.
From the above description, the intensity of a mafia war can be deduced even today. To get into the act, Salt Lake School Model United Nations 2017 presents its most awaited flagship committee. The Dawn of Dons: 1931 Post Castellammarese War.

AGENDA: Post Castellammarese War Negotiation 1931
