Rejection of urgent hearing of plea by SC for quashing CBFC certificate of ‘Padmavat’

The Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice Dipak Mishra, Justice Khanwilkar and Justice Chandrachud refused to hear a PIL filed by Advocate M.L.Sharma seeking the quashing of the certificate issued by Central Board of Film Certification in respect of the film ‘Padmavat’ under Section 5A of the Cinematographers Act 1952.

The Advocate contended for rescheduling the hearing and promised to show the court that how the CBFC in issuing the certificate has not complied with the section of the above-mentioned act. The Chief Justice rejected the plea. The Advocate further insisted that after the release of the film, if cinema halls are burnt, who will be responsible? To which the Chief Justice replied “Its not their job, we have to function as a constitutional court”.
